There is one open playground in Celbridge, in Willowbrook Park. It has been subjected to repeated vandalism, possibly due to poor passive supervision (set back from the road and distant from most housing in the area). A second playground, in the Celbridge Abbey grounds, is no longer accessible due to St. John of Gods closing the Abbey grounds to the public. There is no playground on the south-west side of the Liffey.
As a result, it is generally accepted that Celbridge needs a second public playground. The map on pg. 15 of Kildare County Council's "Kildare Play Strategy 2018-2028" envisages a second playground for Celbridge, but notes that this is subject to identification of a suitable site and resources.
Finding good locations for facilities of this type is challenging in Celbridge. See here for a very similar discussion around outdoor youth facilities - many of the factors are identical.
The topic of a second playground was discussed at the October 2024 Celbridge-Leixlip Municipal District Meeting:
"There were no plans currently to add additional equipment at [the] location [of the current playground]. It was agreed … to await the masterplan for Donaghcumper to see if a playground could be included in these plans."
